Don’t Shoot the Messenger
Delivering News Parents Need to Know but Don’t Want to Hear
In every childcare setting, providers regularly face the challenge of telling a parent something she doesn’t want to hear about her child. The news may be of a relatively minor infraction (e.g. biting, name calling) or of a more serious issue that requires further action (e.g. possible learning disability, ongoing disruptive behavior issue). A parent’s initial reaction is often one of anger, outrage, denial, or blame. In turn, providers often feel guilty, defensive, and helpless. The result is a conversation that is marred by emotional reactions and lacks any real focus or resolution.
This workshop will focus on helping participants…
* deliver their message in a clear and supportive way.
* effectively deal with the variety of emotions parents typically express in difficult situations.
* establish appropriate boundaries, the key providing a supportive environment while maintaining a safe emotional distance from the issue.
* use these conversations to ally with rather than alienate parents.
* develop and present a plan of action.
